Bio-Distillery for Sustainable Energy Management on Farmlands: A Tale of an Environmentally Optimistic Farmer for the Future Generations

"A day without sugar is a day without smiles."

Godavari Biorefineries Ltd (GBL)

The Godavari Biorefineries Ltd (GBL) of the Somaiya Group is a pioneer in manufacturing sugar and ethanol-based chemicals in India. The founder of GBL held the principle that "Give back to society more than you receive." The idea remains the driving force behind the biorefineries' commitment to the communities, even as operations expand and thrive. The GBL works to facilitate economic, environmental and social development. The collaboration with the local communities opens up new livelihoods, empowers women economically, and creates access to education.

The sustainability vision implies leveraging bio-renewable raw resources to manufacture things and ensuring that the raw materials' full value is maximised. Sustainability is the foundation of the factory's operating model. The factory uses cane water to crush sugarcane rather than groundwater, exhibiting a responsible approach to water usage. Moreover, the process of extracting cellulose and fibre from sugarcane bagasse is a feedstock for power generation and greenhouse gas mitigation. GBL was the first to utilise molasses as a feedstock for ethanol production and the creation of compounds derived from ethanol. After the fermentation process was completed, the leftover material was regarded as a resource for producing biogas. The press mud and debris from this stream were combined to create a compost known as Bhumlabh. Local farmers' efforts to practise organic farming are aided by the biomass produced by this process.

For the next step in the production of sugar, farmers use tractors to deliver their harvest of tonnes of organic sugarcane to Godavari Biorefineries Ltd. The agricultural process incorporates the Jeevamrutha system, a  natural liquid fertilizer. It is made from Desi cow gamut, desi cow dung, jaggery, besan, mud and food leftovers.

In addition to providing the plants with effective nutrition and maintaining their health, this organic method is a sustainable substitute for chemical-based pesticides.

Godavari Biorefineries Ltd. developed by designing effective production procedures that support both environmental and economic sustainability by using fewer resources and producing less waste and emissions while increasing product yields for the biorefineries. Throughout the value chain, GBL uses each co-product as a feedstock for a different value-added product.
